Christmas Card

Tonight Izzypop and I decided to make a Christmas card for her teacher. We used the Tim Holtz Christmas stamps and embossing folders. Then Izzypop used her creative talent to draw a perfect picture. We even made an envelope.

Christmas Crafting

I have actually gotten more Christmas crafting done this year than I had anticipated.  As always, Mom has been a huge help.

First, Mom bought us all "JOY" from The Wood Connection.  I love it, because it starts with a J and ends with a Y.  (Love you Callie.)

 

And here is Mom's version.  It looks great in her front room.  Incidentally, someday I hope to be as great as my mom at decorating for Christmas.  This is her front room.  You should see the "big" room.  I'll be sure to post pics of it later.

I decided to try to make the wreath for my front door.  The pre-decorated ones seemed so expensive.  I bought the wreath and sign from Hobby Lobby.  I wrapped some ribbon around it, wired various sizes of ornaments together in bunches, then wired them to the wreath.  All in all, took about 30 min to make.  I hope it keeps well for next year.  I kinda like it.

I wanted to get something cute and inexpensive for all the girls in our Young Women group.  I went to Bath and Body works and got the pocket hand sanitizers along with cases for them that the girls can use to attach them to their backpacks, purses, etc.  They were on sale and I had a $10 off $30 coupon so it came out to be pretty cheap.  I used a Sizzix die cut to cut out tag shapes.  I then used a Sizzix Tim Holtz embossing folder to emboss some snowflakes on the tags as well.  I tied them with a bit of 1/8 in. ribbon.  The tags say

"May your days be merry...

And your hands be clean.

Merry Christmas!"

My favorite craft I have worked on this year has been these wooden block advent calendars.  I made these for the Young Women leaders in our ward.  First I painted the base red and the blocks off-white.  I put a different scrapbook paper on each side of the blocks, then Mom helped me cut the numbers out of scrapbook paper using her cricut.  We printed out "Christmas is Coming..." onto scrapbook paper for the base.  I sanded the all the edges with sandpaper, then mod podged it all.  I also used the Tim Holtz Sizzix ornament die to cut tags out.  I stamped them using a snowflake, tree and "To: From:" stamp and tied it all with some grograin ribbon.  The ladies loved them.....maybe I should have made one for myself :)

HP Halloween Costumes

Halloween is our favorite around here.  My mom and I make the kids' costumes every year.  This year, I splurged and we made me one too.  I couldn't resist!  It's Harry Potter!  Here's me and the kids and my wickedly wonderful inspiration to the right -- Rita Skeeter.

It was a good time making these with my mom and an even better time enjoying them with my kiddos.  Thanks Mom for all the help!  We did good!

Advent Calendar #2

My mom, sister and I were pretty motivated after the successful craft night our family had last Sunday, so this weekend, we took on a couple more projects.  After my mom and I finished my Halloween advent calendar, we were so excited that we just had to do one to surprise my sister.  Today we put the finishing touches on it including a 31, bat and "Trick or Treat" sign to go on top.  It goes perfectly with her "Wicked" she did last Sunday and her "Spooky" she did yesterday.

I also got to do my Halloween word, "Fright".  I loved how Shereen's turned out last Sunday, so I decided to copy it :).  It matches perfectly with my advent calendar.  So dang cute!

I still cannot believe that we made these.  They have to be my very favorite things we have ever made.  And that's saying something after all the quilts, scrapbook pages, costumes, stockings and so forth.  I love these things!  Thanks again, mom and dad, for all your hard work on th them.  Love you!

Hansen Halloween!

We decided to get all the Hansen girls together and get a little crafty.  My mom made some witch shoes for the Halloween party table decorations and our job was to create a witch hat to match the shoes.  So, grandmas, aunts, cousins, sisters, nieces, moms and daughters all got together and got creative.  Here's what we came up with....it was like a glitter bomb had gone off in my mom's house.  Way cute, but next year, NO GLITTER!

And as if that wasn't enough to accomplish in one day, we decided we just *had* to make some wooden Halloween words for our own decorations.  We painted each letter, then mod podged Halloween papers on the front and distressed them.  Check them out:

5 Minute Halloween Wreath

I cannot tell you how busy it has been around here.  I have had little to no time for all my Halloween decoration delusions of grandeur.  I was able to whip this wreath out in 5 minutes for my front door.  I found the wreath, broom and ribbon at Michael's and got the sign at Joann's.  I wired the broom and sign to the wreath with some florist's wire, added a couple bows with the ribbon and chucked it up on the door.  Not complicated, but much better than the empty space that was there before. :)

Halloween Advent Calendar

Inspiration

Last year I made an advent calendar for Christmas.  Since then I have been looking for Halloween advent calendars.  I found these two that were pretty cool.

I loved that they were drawers so you could put little treats or toys in them, but I didn't like the fact that they didn't have the right number of drawers.  October 25th != Halloween.  And even *if* I liked these calendars well enough to buy them, they weren't for sale.  Apparently there are other people out there with nothing better to do than to make their own Halloween advent calendars.  I was on my own.....well sort of.

Supplies

The first step was to brainstorm with my mom on how I would actually accomplish this project.  She suggested a nuts and bolts organizer.  I was skeptical.  I was going for a wooden look.  I'm not big on cheap plastic.  But I decided to look anyway.  Do you know how hard it is to find an organizer with the right number of drawers?.....Hard.  Obviously I wasn't going to find one with 31 drawers.  But since the kids would be getting treats and tricks by other means on the 31st, I figured 30 would suffice.  I found this one on Amazon.

After the organizer was delivered, I spent some more time brainstorming.  I turned the drawers around so the fronts would be flat.  I then did some more searching online and found these tiny wooden rectangles that were exactly the same size as the drawer fronts.  I also bought little wooden spools to use for the handles.  My other supplies were flat black spray paint, Halloween scrapbook paper and embellishments, 1/4 in wood for sides of box, wood trim for front of box, and metal box feet found at my local Michael's.

I've mentioned before that, for me, crafting is much more fun as a team sport.  This project was no exception.  My mom helped me a ton on getting the drawer fronts finished and my dad was in charge of building the wood surround for the box as well as helping me with other tactical issues.  The team started out by giving everything a shot of flat black paint. 

After the box was painted, dad started on building the surround....um...Dad, I don't think that clamp is big enough.  Seriously. LOL.  While he was working on that, Mom and I worked on picking out the scrapbook paper to use on the fronts of the wooden rectangles.  We cut the papers to size and glued them on the front.

Once they were dry, I distressed them with some distress ink and mod podged them. We used all kinds of numbers and embellishments to make the drawers look old and random.  After all the embellishments were on, I glued the painted spools on using craft glue.

Meanwhile, in the garage, Dad finished building the box surround.  We used putty to fill in any gaps and I sanded it to a smooth finish.  Then I gave it a coat of the same black spray paint.  I also mod podged the whole box to make it the same finish as the drawer faces.

After the paint had dried, I glued each of the drawer faces onto the drawers themselves using a hot glue gun.  Back in the garage, dad drilled holes through the wood and plastic using the spool center holes as guides.  We then took flathead nails, pushed them through the holes and cut off the ends with a pair of dikes, putting a spot of hot glue on the end just for good measure.

Finishing Up

I wanted a little something to put on top of the box so I picked up a wooden 31 and bat from the Wood Connection and painted and mod podged more Halloween paper on them.  I found the Halloween sign at Hobby Lobby and distressed it a little so it would go a little bit better with the rest of the box.  I attached the metal box feet to the bottom of the box and voila!  She was done!

I cannot tell you how happy I am with how this turned out.  It is so much better than I thought it would be. The kids love it too. After Izzypop opened today's drawer and found a little mini chocolate bar, she told me she likes it "WAY" better than the Christmas advent calendar which coincidentally does not involve treats. ;)
